Poetry by Yacoob Manjoo: A Most Blessed Rooftop

This piece was inspired by the author’s (Yacoob Manjoo) time in Madinah, on the rooftop of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) mosque, a few weeks prior to Hajj 2011. 

I like rooftops because they are freedom.

As I write this, I’m seated on one.
No ordinary one, mind you;
but one in a city of immense peace;
on top of a building so blessed that only one other is greater.

আপনি কোন গোলপোস্টে গোল করতে চান?

এখন ইউরো কাপ চলছে, তাই অনেকেই মেতে আছেন ফুটবল খেলা নিয়ে। এই সুযোগে আজ তাহলে একটু কথা বলেই ফেলি ফুটবল খেলা নিয়ে। আপনার মনে হতে পারে একটা ইসলামিক ব্লগে আমি ফুটবল খেলা নিয়ে কথা বলছি, এটা আবার কিভাবে এই ব্লগের উদ্দেশ্যের সাথে যায়? আচ্ছা ঠিক আছে, না হয় আমি ফুটবল খেলার ফলাফল নিয়ে কথা বললামনা, কিন্তু এই খেলার কিছু ভাল জিনিস নিয়ে অন্তত আমরা আলোচনা করতে পারি। আমি ফুটবল খেলায় যে মূল জিনিসটি দেখতে পাই তা হচ্ছে এই খেলায় “লক্ষ্য” মাত্র একটি। আর সবাই সেই লক্ষ্যের দিকে  ছুটে চলে পাগলের মত অথবা সৃজনশীল ভাবে যাই বলেননা কেন; লক্ষ্যটা হচ্ছে “গোলপোস্ট”, আর মাধ্যম হচ্ছে “এট্যাক এবং ডিফেন্ড।” নব্বই মিনিটের খেলায় যে যত বেশি গোল করতে পারবে অথবা গোল ঠেকাতে পারবে সেই হবে বিজয়ী। সিম্পল ম্যাথ…!

শিক্ষনীয় বিষয় হচ্ছে, মাত্র নব্বই মিনিটের এই খেলায় যখন লক্ষ্য এবং টেকটিকস অথবা স্ট্রেটেজী এইসব নিয়ে এত মাথা চুলকাতে (ভাবতে) হয়; তাহলে নব্বই বছরের (যদিও আমাদের গড় বয়স হচ্ছে ৬০ বছর) সমাপ্তিতে আপনি নিজেকে কোথায় দেখতে চান তা নিয়ে লক্ষ্য, টেকটিকস এবং স্ট্রেটেজী নিয়ে নিশ্চয় ভাববার প্রয়োজনীয়তা আছে, আপনার কি মনে হয়?

As death toll passes 20, HRW urges Bangladesh to keep Burma border open

People fled their burning homes and Burma’s security forces struggled to contain communal violence Tuesday in a western region where state media reported the death toll climbed to 21.

The conflict pitting ethnic Rakhine Buddhists against stateless Rohingya Muslims in coastal Rakhine state marks some of the worst sectarian unrest recorded in Burma in years. President Thein Sein has declared an emergency in Rakhine state and warned that the spiraling violence could threaten the democratic reforms tentatively transforming the country after half a century of military rule.

From Friday through Monday, the evening’s news report said, 21 people have been killed, 21 wounded and 1,662 houses burned down around Rakhine state. The mass violence started Friday in Maungdaw township, when what was said to be a mob of 1,000 Muslims — described as “terrorists” in the state media — went on a rampage and had to be restrained by armed troops.

Sectarian Violence Continues in Myanmar

Violence continued in western Myanmar on Tuesday with security forces struggling to contain sectarian and ethnic clashes that have displaced thousands of people.

The conflict between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims has left about 25 people dead and dozens wounded in five days of sectarian violence in the coastal Rakhine state.

“About 25 people have been killed during the unrest,” a senior government official told AFP news agency on Tuesday, without providing details of how they died or whether they were Buddhists or Muslims.

President Thein Sein has declared a state of emergency and deployed army troops to restore stability, warning that the unrest could threaten the fragile nation’s recent democratic reforms as it emerges from half a century of military rule.

The Light on the Path

Muadh ibn Jabal (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said,

“Learn Knowledge, for learning knowledge is a type of Khashyah (awe,reverence, fear) of Allah, seeking it is an act of worship, studying it is a type of Tasbih (declaring the perfection of Allah), searching for it is a jihad, teaching it to those who do not know it is a charity and delivering it to those worthy of it is an act of drawing closer (to Allah).

Knowledge is the reference guide to the halal (allowed) and the haram (disallowed), a light on the path for the people of Paradise, the companion during loneliness, the friend during estrangement, the converser during seclusion, the guide in times of ease and times of difficulty; a weapon to use against the enemies and the quality that is valued by friends.

Allah elevates some people by knowledge to the rank of leaders in righteousness who are followed, their actions imitated and their opinions referred to. The angels long to attend their gatherings and shade them with their wings. Everything wet or dry, the fish in the sea and its creatures, beasts of prey and cattle that live on land invoke Allah to forgive them. Most certainly, this is because Knowledge is the life of the hearts against ignorance, and the lamps of the eyes in darkness. With knowledge the slave reaches the ranks of the righteous and the elevated grades in this life and the hereafter.

আমাদের প্রিয় অতিথিঃ আসুন এই অতিথিকে আন্তরিক স্বাগতম জানাই

আপনি যখন জানবেন আপনার খুবই পরিচিত এবং আপন একজন আপনার বাসায় আসছেন আর কিছুদিন আপনার সাথে থাকবেন আপনি কি করবেন? আপনি তার জন্য কত কিছুরই না ব্যবস্থা করবেন – তার থাকার ঘরের পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্নতা, তার পছন্দের সুস্বাদু খাবারের ব্যবস্থা ইত্যাদি। অতিথির জন্য এই ধরনের পূর্বপ্রস্তুতির ব্যপারটি মানুষের একটি আন্তরিক স্বভাব বলা যেতে পারে।

তবে আমি এখানে এমন এক অতিথির কথা বলছি যার আসার ফলে আমাদের অনেকের জীবনেই আমূল পরিবর্তন আসে। অথবা বলা যেতে পারে এই অতিথিকে আলিঙ্গনের ফলে তা আমাদের জীবনে এমন এক সুবাস ছড়িয়ে দেয় যা আমাদের সাথে সবসময় রয়ে যায়। তবে এসব সম্ভব তখনই যখন আমরা আমাদের অতিথিকে তার যথাযথ মর্যাদা দিয়ে স্বাগতম জানাব।

আপনি কি ভাবছেন? আসলে আমি একটি পবিত্র মাসের ব্যপারে কথা বলব এই প্রবন্ধে। এখন হয়ত আপনি কিছুটা ধারণা করতে পারছেন আমি এতক্ষণ কি নিয়ে কথা বলছি।

হ্যাঁ; আমি কথা বলছি আরবী মাসের নবম মাস – রমজান মাস নিয়ে। রমজানের রোযা ইসলামের চতুর্থ স্তম্ভ এবং একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইবাদত। ২৯ অথবা ৩০ দিনের একটি মাস যা আমাদের জীবনে অতিথি হয়ে আসে; আর আমাদের অনেকের এই সাধারণ জীবনের মধ্যে ঘটিয়ে দেয় এক বৈপ্লবিক পরিবর্তন। মূল পরিবর্তনের মধ্যে কিছু বলা যেতে পারে, যেমন:

বকধার্মিক

আকাশে শান্তির নীড়ের প্রতীক বকের মত এহেন নিরীহ এক পাখির নামে কি বিশাল এক কলংক ‘বকধার্মিক।’ আচ্ছা, বক কি কারও বাড়া ভাতে ছাই দিয়েছে? উঠানে/বারান্দায় নেড়ে দেয়া কাপড় চুরি করে পালিয়ে গেছে? রাতের অন্ধকারে কারও হাঁস মুরগি খেয়ে গেছে? নাকি কারও ক্ষেতের কুমড়া খেয়ে সাবাড় করেছে? তাহলে, মুনাফেক্বী/হিপোক্রেসির সাথে বকের সম্পর্ক কি? বেচারা বক!

নাহয় বুঝলাম, বাংলা সাহিত্যিকেরা বককে ফাঁসিয়ে দিয়ে ভুল করেছেন, কিন্তু আমরা তাকে নির্যাতন করছি কেন? (স্যরি, নির্যাতন আজকাল বেশ বিখ্যাত একটা বাজ্জওয়ার্ড – না ব্যবহার করতে চাইলেও চলে আসে) ভন্ড, প্রতারক, নিমকহারাম, হিপোক্রেট, মুনাফিক্ব এসব না বলে বকধার্মিক কেন বলছি? সবকিছুকে হাল্কা করে দেখার ব্যাপারে আমরা অত্যন্ত পারদর্শী। ভন্ডামির মত ভয়ংকর রোগকেও তাই আমাদের বকের মত নিরীহ প্রাণীর ওপর দিয়ে চালাতে হবে যেন জিনিসটা হাল্কা হয়ে উপেক্ষা করা সহজতর হয়।

সোশ্যাল মিডিয়াতে একে অপরকে নাস্তিক, আস্তিক, বকধার্মিক!, ইহুদী, খৃষ্টান বানিয়ে ছাড়ছি, সকাল থেকে দুপুর থেকে গভীর রাত। এদিকে ঘড়ি ছুটে চলে একের পর এক দিন শেষ করে দেয়, মুয়াজ্জিন আজানের পর আজান দিয়ে যায়, ওয়াক্তের পর ওয়াক্ত চলে যায়। ফেসবুককে কাছে পেয়ে নামাজ থেকে দূরে আছি। আর ইন্টারনেটে দেশে বিদেশে ধর্ম নিয়ে যুদ্ধ করে গভীর রাতে ঘুমাতে হয়, ফজরের নামাজ পড়া কি সম্ভব বলেন? আসলেই কি ধর্ম প্রতিষ্ঠা/ধর্মের দিকে দাওয়াত দিচ্ছি? নাকি আমাদের ইগো প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য লড়াই করে যাচ্ছি? এটা কি আদৌ ইন্টারনেট ভিত্তিক ধর্মকে জয়ী করার যুদ্ধ না নিজের ইগোকে? ইসলাম জয়ী হবেই আপনি ফেসবুকে কাঁদা ছোঁড়াছুঁড়ি করলেও না করলেও – সেই প্রতিজ্ঞা আল্লাহ সুবহানাওয়াতায়ালা নিজেই করেছেন। আমরা দৃষ্টান্তমূলক মুসলিম হতে না পারলে নিদেনপক্ষে ফেসবুকে ঝড় তুলে ইসলামকে জয়ী করানো যাবেনা।

আজান দেয়, মাথায় কাপড় দিব – কারন না দিলে লোকে বলবে ভালো ফ্যামিলি থেকে আসিনি, কিন্তু নামাজ পড়বো না। এখনকার মেয়েরা যদিও মাথায়ও কাপড় দেয় না শোনা যায়। আর যদি দেয়ও আজান দিলেই কেবল বাবার অনুরোধ মনে পড়ে কেন? “মাথায় কাপড় দে, মা।”  নিজের মেয়ের নগ্ন শরীর মানুষের চোখকে খাওয়াতে না পারলেতো লোকে আমাদের আধুনিক পরিবার বলবেনা। হিজাব পরালেও খুউউব টাইটফিট হিজাব পরাবো যতটা টাইট হয়ত নন-হিজাবিরাও এতটা পরে না। আমাদের যদি কোন ধারনা থাকতো, টাইটফিট হিজাবও ছেলেদের জন্য কত বড় জুলুম।

আসছে ইবাদাতের মৌসুমঃ আপনি কি প্রস্তুত?

সেদিন রাতে আড্ডা দিচ্ছিলাম এক নিকটত্মায়ীয়ের সাথে। উনি একটা জুতার কোম্পানিতে কাজ করেন। তার সাথে আলাপচারিতায় জানলাম যে এখন ভালো ডিজাইনের জুতা বা জামা পাওয়া যাবে না, এর জন্য আরো মাসখানেক অপেক্ষা করতে হবে, কারণ সামনে আসছে ঈদের মৌসুম। কোম্পানি আর দোকানদার উভয়েই অপেক্ষা করছে ঈদ মৌসুমের জন্য।

ব্যবসায়ীরা তো প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন তাদের ব্যবসার মৌসুমের জন্য। আমরা যারা মুসলিম তারা কি প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছি আমাদের ইবাদাতের মৌসুমের জন্য? এখন চলছে রজব মাস। আর দেড় মাস পরেই শুরু হয়ে যাবে রকমারি ইবাদাতে পরিপুর্ণ মাস – রমাদান। যদি প্রস্তুতি নেওয়া শুরু না করে থাকি, তবে এখনই সময়।

আপনি প্রশ্ন করতে পারেন, রমাদানের আবার প্রস্তুতি কি? রমাদান তো প্রতি বছরই আসে। কিন্তু একটু চিন্তা করে দেখুন তো, প্রস্তুতি ছাড়া কোন কাজ কি ঠিকমত করা যায়? রাসুলুল্লাহ (সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম) কিন্তু ঠিকই রমাদানের জন্য আগে থেকেই প্রস্তুতি নিতেন।
